Why do we worship?

I mean, if giving of our whole life to God is already a natural response to the realisation of who He is, and what He’s done for us, then what more is there for us to achieve in our public acts of worship? Why do we come together to sing hymns and songs of praise, to share communion, to kneel?

You could write a book on this, so I’ll suggest part of an answer now, and return to the question a few more times in the coming weeks!

St. Augustine defined sacrament as "an outward sign of an inward grace". Depending on your tradition, there are some very specific rites or activities which are labelled as ‘sacraments’, but it seems to me that any act of worship could be described as being sacramental.

When we come together to sing songs of praise, it is an outward declaration of the inner reality that we love Jesus! It is an outward expression that He is continually active in our public and private lives.

So, how is He working in your private life? This is not a point of judgement, but of love. Open up your heart, and let Him in. He is full of Grace for you.

Take a moment now to remember your first love for Him; before the burdens, troubles or monotony of life set it.
